The car keys felt heavy in Leo’s hand as he fumbled with them, missing the ignition slot twice. He was already late. His brother, Ben, had called in a panic. His daughter, Chloe, was drawing it again.

Leo slammed the car door shut, the sound echoing in the quiet street. He drove, gripping the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles were white. The familiar landscape blurred past, the houses, trees, and other cars all becoming a rushing stream of images.

The figure in Chloe’s artwork: a tall, thin man with perpetually crossed eyes, had haunted his own childhood dreams. He wasn't sure why, but he felt a cold fear creep up his spine.
